Remit Vote
Town Hall Info Session
A town hall information session was held on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 where we gathered on Zoom with our friends from Shining Waters Regional Council. A recording was made of the town hall meeting, where we reviewed and discussed the remit to remove structural barriers to developing and sustaining an autonomous Indigenous Church (also known as Remit One). Special guest speaker was the Rev. Michael Blair, General Secretary.
Decision of Vote
The following motion was considered and voted on at the meeting with the following results:
Motion by Kathie Smith / Nancy Ferguson
that Canadian Shield Regional Council agrees to amend the Basis of Union to reflect:
- That The United Church of Canada will be organized as follows (1) a three-council structure, consisting of communities of faith, regional councils and a Denominational Council*; and (2) an autonomous National Indigenous Organization; and
- That once the new autonomous National Indigenous Organization is established within The United Church of Canada, it will have its own mechanisms to make any future changes to its structure and processes, and, therefore will not be subject to the remit process under section 7.4.1 of the Basis of Union**; and
- The changes required for the establishment of the autonomous National Indigenous Organization.
Motion – Carried
The Regional Council office will submit their response to the General Council office as per instructions.

Chair of Executive’s Welcome Message
It is Regional Council Meeting (RCM) time again! This year, the Canadian Shield Regional Council is hosting an online meeting on November 25, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our meeting.
Our theme for this meeting is The Stones That Shout. For those of you who kept your 2019 Regional Council Meeting covenanting stones, it would be a great idea if you could bring it to the online meeting and set it down beside you.
In June at our first Festival of Faith event, we renewed friendships, made new friends and connections, and had time to start to develop clusters and networks. I hope that this is continuing. At this online meeting, we will hear what has been keeping us busy over the last year.
Also, we will be voting on Remit #1: Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization within The United Church of Canada. It was great that so many of you attended the Town Hall with Michael Blair to help us understand the remit. The video recording of the Town Hall can be found on this webpage, a little further down.
