Asset mapping is the process of looking around your community to see what assets you have. Too often we limit that perspective to the local congregation or even the active members within the local congregation. Every community has many more assets. In any community, each group, community agency, store, neighbourhood, school, social agency, even other communities of faith within your area have assets, and they, like you, are concerned about the wider community. They can be partners with you in whatever you seek to accomplish in your community. – Rev. Dr. Bill Steadman, “Asset Mapping”

This moment provides an important opportunity for us all to share together in assessing the capacities, skills and gifts of our congregations. It is also a moment that lends itself to renewed and reinvigorated partnerships. This survey is designed to assist in this task. The survey not only asks several sets of questions about your church’s current mission and ministry, but also invites consideration of gifts and assets that can be shared in common in partnership with your neighbours and siblings in faith. A small group of people from your community of faith are invited to collaborate on representational congregational responses to this survey.

Congregational Ministries:

List the ministries that your community of faith supports. These could be organized such as UCW, Bible Study, Sunday School. They could be activities such as advocacy, community gardening, or food bank.

Community Partnerships:

What groups or community partners does your community of faith connect with? How does your congregation engage with your neighbourhood? What faith partners do you cooperate with? What are the non-profit or for profit small businesses that your congregation is in relationship with?

Leadership and Staff Assets:

What are your congregation’s particular strengths in leadership? Who are the leaders, and what are their skills and capacities? Who are the paid staff or volunteers who could be called upon to share their specialized expertise?

Individual Assets:

List three or four skills or talents people share regularly in your community of faith. Music? Food? Pastoral visiting? Communication? What is something your church invests time and talent in? What are some personal skills people regularly share? What jobs or activities did people do in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s etc.? What involvement in past communities of faith or other organizations have people had? Think creatively!

Economic Assets:

What does your congregation spend money on? Do you have reserve funds? Designated funds available to support mission? What are your congregation’s best stewardship practices?

Technology Assets:

List three or four technology assets of your community of faith. Do you have access to WiFi? Sound equipment? Video camera, screen and/or projectors? What kind of office equipment do you use? What kind of online presence does your community have (eg: Website? Facebook? Other social media?). Who are the people with technology expertise in your congregation?

Physical Assets:

List three or four physical assets of your congregation. They could be location and physical building gifts. Does your congregation have a kitchen? A nursery? A hall or gathering place? Parking? What expertise does your congregation have in regards to maintaining physical property?
