SUMMARY:Vigil to End Poverty -- Supporting a Guaranteed Livable Income in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Canada can choose to end poverty. Canada has more than enough wealth to guarantee that none of its citizens suffer from hunger\, cold\, or homelessness. The United Church of Canada calls on our municipal\, provincial\, and federal government to support a Guaranteed Livable Income (GLI) that would insure that every Canadian will have enough to get by. \nOn March 26th at 2:30\, members of Sudbury’s United Churches will gather together at St-Andrew’s United Church to support this call. We will hold a vigil remembering the victims of poverty; learning about how GLI addresses this problem; and finally demonstrating our support for GLI in front of MP Lapointe’s office. \nALL ARE INVITED to join us. Please wear black clothes and bring candles\, if able. \nTo learn more\, please contact Torrin Maag at mtwol123@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Book Study: Queer Virtue: What LGBTQ People Know about Life and Love and How it Can Revitalize Christianity
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Manitou Intentional Learning Community for a three-session book study on Zoom of Queer Virtue: What LGBTQ People Know about Life and Love and How it Can Revitalize Christianity by Elizabeth Edman led by Peter Haddow\, from the Canadian Shield Regional Council Affirm Team on February 27th\, March 6th and March 13th at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.\nThe book examines how we can promote a “truer\, healthier version of Christianity and bring it to bear on the world.” Arguing that becoming such a community requires “discipline\, introspection and a willingness to repent when we get it wrong”\, Edman suggests that this study is especially appropriate for Lent.\nArguing from the heart of scripture\, Edman reveals how queering Christianity—that is\, disrupting simplistic ways of thinking about self and other—can illuminate contemporary Christian faith. Pushing well past the notion that “Christian love = tolerance\,” Edman offers a bold alternative: he recognition that queer people can help Christians better understand their fundamental calling and the creation of sacred space where LGBTQ Christians are seen as gifts to the church.\nTo register and for more information including details of weekly readings\, please go to Manitou Intentional Learning Community (manitoulearningcommunity.com) or email Gillian manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com\nParticipants are cordially invited to make a donation (suggestion $10) by etransfer to manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com.\nPlease note\, the text is not available in Chapters stores. It can be purchased from Chapters online and from Amazon.ca. It is also available as an ebook. We recommend that you purchase the text promptly as there have been issues with availability.

SUMMARY:Getting Started in Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Getting Started in Stewardship\nTuesday\, February 21 – 1 p.m. EST\nPresented on Zoom \nJoin United Church people from across the country to learn some stewardship first principles.\nStart with an on-line 2-hour course that answers questions like: What is stewardship all about anyway? Isn’t stewardship just a churchy word for fundraising? Why do people give\, and why would they give to our church? What can we do to encourage greater generosity? \nThe practical assignments that follow will help you reflect on giving and generosity as part of your faith\, gather and interpret some of the giving data from your community of faith\, and build a stewardship team in order to start making stewardship a priority in your community of faith. \nCompletion of this course is a great first step before participating in Stewardship Best Practices\, which will be offered next in March 2023. \nRegistration link – https://forms.office.com/r/idCxNLcBeg \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Rethink and Renew: Restarting anti-poverty initiatives in the Church
DESCRIPTION:‘Truly I tell you\, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine\, you did for me.’ In Matthew 25:40\, God call us to be of service to others and to end poverty in our communities. The Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown meant that many Church programs stopped running… and many did not start up again. This could be a time to lament what we have lost but it is also an opportunity to start again and build even better projects. Join MILC on Monday\, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom for a panel discussion about anti-poverty work in our communities. The panel presentations offer a chance to hear about Christian responsibility to work to end poverty\, root causes of poverty in our communities and how Churches can get involved in practical projects. This panel of speakers will help participants bring new life to projects to address poverty in our communities. \nPanel speakers:\nRev. Glen Eagle\, United Church of Canada\nRev. Pam Cullen\, London Community Chaplaincy\nRev. Michael Blair\, General Secretary\, United Church of Canada \nRegister online at https://www.manitoulearningcommunity.com/. \nContact Gillian if you have any questions at manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:Annual Gathering of United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel (UNJPPI)\nIn line with our United Church call to ‘Bold Discipleship\, Deep Spirituality\, Radical Justice’\, the theme of this year’s UNJPPI Gathering is “Responding to a Cry for Hope”. That is the Call which was issued in 2019 by Kairos Palestine and Palestinian Christians. \nThe UNJPPI Gathering will be in London\, Ontario from May 6 to 8\, with a community event at King’s College on May 5. \nWorking in the spirit of decolonization\, most of our leadership will be Palestinian as we try to decolonize our work and listen to Palestinians talk to us out of their experience. They include:\n• Yara Shufani – a Palestinian Canadian on “Unity Uprisings 2021 – A Year Later”\n• Shadia Qubti – whose home is Nazareth and who has been studying in Canada since 2020. “Peace-building beyond dipping humus”.\n• Amal Alhaddad – who lives in Victoria and has recently emigrated from Gaza.\n• Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac\, from Bethlehem\, in via technology speaking on “Jesus’ call to be peace-builders”\n• Dr. Gabor Mate will also address our gathering by zoom on “Would you rather be illusioned or see things as they really are”.\n• Mariam Barghouti – a journalist from Ramallah on “What is happening right now? How voices of Palestinians are being silenced”. \nWe will learn together from what our resource people have to say as well as each participant\, as we share our experiences\, insights and understanding. \nWe hope to be encouraged and re-vitalized in our support of human rights for Palestinians and justice and peace for Israelis and Palestinians. \nFor more information\, check the Gathering website at https://unjppi.ca or email George Bartlett at g.bartlett@sympatico.ca.

SUMMARY:Discipleship in a Burning World
DESCRIPTION:Discipleship in a Burning World\nThe New Creed of the United Church of Canada calls us “to live with respect in Creation” recognizing that creation is a gift of God. We recognize too that caring for Creation is a spiritual commitment and that environmental issues have profound ethical and moral dimensions that impact us all. \nWith this in mind\, the Manitou Intentional Learning Community is excited to present a workshop “Discipleship in a Burning World” that will invite us to reorient ourselves within creation and examine what that demands of our discipleship. \nThe event will take place on Wednesday\, April 27th\, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom and our special guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Jessica Hetherington\, an eco-theologian and ordered minister within the United Church of Canada serving in the Ottawa area who will share with us her passion for environmental justice and behaviour change. Following her presentation\, there will be opportunities for questions and discussion. \nTo register and receive the Zoom link\, please visit manitoulearningcommunity.com
