SUMMARY:Medical Assistance in Dying: continuing the conversation
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rev. Kathy Dahmer who works at Health Sciences North in Sudbury as a Psychotherapist in the role of chaplain. \nTo register\, visit\nManitou Intentional Learning Community (manitoulearningcommunity.com) \nThis workshop will provide a safe space to ask difficult questions. It will provide information and insights and provide an opportunity to wrestle with theology and faith\, ethics and fear. Ultimately\, we will be exploring how we care for others on their journey and those in their circle of support\, each with different experiences of anticipatory grief complicated at times by a moral/spiritual burden. \nMore about Rev. Kathy Dahmer:\nRev Kathy Dahmer lives in Whitefish and works at HSN as a Registered Psychotherapist in the role of Chaplain. She works with patients and families as they navigate MAID and attends the deaths to provide care; first to patient\, then to family. Kathy has extensive experience in providing supportive care in palliation from her many years of work at Hospice. In private practice Kathy specializes in Emotion Focused Therapy\, which is an experiential therapy rooted in attachment science. Kathy suggests that often the questions from our heads are coming from a need within our heart\, and listens deeply for the language of the heart. These experiences lived and learned contribute to her understanding pastoral care as the greatest reflection of incarnation. Kathy is passionate about mentoring and modelling pastoral care as a non-anxious presence\, able to journey into the deepest of valleys unafraid.

SUMMARY:CCS Friday: Diakonia During Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join in on Friday\, October 27\, 2023 at noon Central Time for an online discussion of climate change and how to respond as faith-filled individuals and as ministers. \nThis past summer has delivered unprecedented and extreme weather phenomena to many parts of Canada and around the world. What are the implications of climate change to your community and context? Who are we within the community of creation\, and what is our responsibility to all life on Earth? What does climate change mean for the collective ministry of diakonia? \nOur special guests will be Eric Tusz-King and Katrina March. Eric is a “mostly-retired” Diaconal Minister in the United Church\, with experience in housing and energy issues\, who has served on the UCC’s Climate Advisory Committee and is still on the Climate Advisory Committee for the town of Tantramar\, NB\, where he currently lives. Katrina is a deaconess and environmental engineer who is a member of the Lutheran Diaconal Association. She is a writer\, speaker\, preacher\, teacher\, and advocate for a better way of living together within creation. She recently moved to Spokane\, Washington. \nCCS Fridays events are free. Please register here to receive a link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwvdeusqzojHtGscd7u2kUu9J2BVAEl3WJj#/registration \nCCS Fridays:\nOnline conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be on a Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 (Winnipeg time) and in the form of a Zoom workshop. There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

SUMMARY:Remit Town Hall Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Town Hall Info Session\nJoin us on Tuesday\, September 19 starting at 6 p.m. for our town hall information session\, when we will gather on Zoom with our friends from Shining Waters Regional Council to review and discuss the remit to remove structural barriers to developing and sustaining an autonomous Indigenous Church. \nCanadian Shield members will be voting on this remit at our November regional meeting. \nThis is a Category 3 Remit\, and so requires a vote by every regional council and each pastoral charge’s governing body. If a regional council or a pastoral charge does not register a vote\, that is considered a vote against the proposal. \nThere is one question to be voted on\, as follows: \nDoes the regional council agree to amend the Basis of Union to reflect: \n\nThat The United Church of Canada will be organized as follows (1) a three-council structure\, consisting of communities of faith\, regional councils and a Denominational Council*; and (2) an autonomous National Indigenous Organization; and\nThat once the new autonomous National Indigenous Organization is established within The United Church of Canada\, it will have its own mechanisms to make any future changes to its structure and processes\, and\, therefore will not be subject to the remit process under section 7.4.1 of the Basis of Union**; and\nThe changes required for the establishment of the autonomous National Indigenous Organization.\n\n  \nFor more information\, videos and other resources\, as well as to register for our September town hall\, please see our Remit to Remove Structural Barriers Page

SUMMARY:Duty of Care Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Duty of Care Workshop\nTuesday\, April 25\, 2023\non ZOOM\n7:00 – 8:30 p.m. \nAs congregations are coming back to in-person worship and other activities\, it is a good time to review your duty of care program. The United Church of Canada is committed to providing a safe environment for worship\, work\, and study in all communities of faith. We have a legal\, moral\, and spiritual duty to care for and protect participants in our church programs. This is a legal principle called duty of care\, and church groups have been\, and will be\, held legally responsible for ensuring reasonable measures are taken to ensure safety. \nOur church is blessed with the gifts of many who offer leadership as volunteers\, staff\, and ministry personnel. These people have a special calling to offer their time and talents in congregations through Sunday schools\, programs for children and youth\, choirs\, home visiting\, and many other ministries of the church. A duty of care program helps ensure that everyone\, including staff\, volunteers\, participants and the church as a whole\, are safe and protected. \nThis workshop will provide a general overview of duty of care and how communities of faith can review their programs and assess risks. This event is designed to engage congregational staff (lay and clergy) and key lay leaders\, including members of the church board/council\, M&P committee and all committees/working groups with responsibility for worship\, outreach\, and spiritual growth/Christian education in the fundamentals of creating safer worshipping communities. \nJoin Melody Duncanson-Hales\, Community of Faith Stewardship Support Minister\, Diane Matheson-Jimenez\, Community of Faith Support Minister\, and Jody Maltby\, Regional Staff Lead and Communities of Faith Minister for an evening of discussion and exploration. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Vigil to End Poverty -- Supporting a Guaranteed Livable Income in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Canada can choose to end poverty. Canada has more than enough wealth to guarantee that none of its citizens suffer from hunger\, cold\, or homelessness. The United Church of Canada calls on our municipal\, provincial\, and federal government to support a Guaranteed Livable Income (GLI) that would insure that every Canadian will have enough to get by. \nOn March 26th at 2:30\, members of Sudbury’s United Churches will gather together at St-Andrew’s United Church to support this call. We will hold a vigil remembering the victims of poverty; learning about how GLI addresses this problem; and finally demonstrating our support for GLI in front of MP Lapointe’s office. \nALL ARE INVITED to join us. Please wear black clothes and bring candles\, if able. \nTo learn more\, please contact Torrin Maag at mtwol123@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Book Study: Queer Virtue: What LGBTQ People Know about Life and Love and How it Can Revitalize Christianity
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Manitou Intentional Learning Community for a three-session book study on Zoom of Queer Virtue: What LGBTQ People Know about Life and Love and How it Can Revitalize Christianity by Elizabeth Edman led by Peter Haddow\, from the Canadian Shield Regional Council Affirm Team on February 27th\, March 6th and March 13th at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.\nThe book examines how we can promote a “truer\, healthier version of Christianity and bring it to bear on the world.” Arguing that becoming such a community requires “discipline\, introspection and a willingness to repent when we get it wrong”\, Edman suggests that this study is especially appropriate for Lent.\nArguing from the heart of scripture\, Edman reveals how queering Christianity—that is\, disrupting simplistic ways of thinking about self and other—can illuminate contemporary Christian faith. Pushing well past the notion that “Christian love = tolerance\,” Edman offers a bold alternative: he recognition that queer people can help Christians better understand their fundamental calling and the creation of sacred space where LGBTQ Christians are seen as gifts to the church.\nTo register and for more information including details of weekly readings\, please go to Manitou Intentional Learning Community (manitoulearningcommunity.com) or email Gillian manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com\nParticipants are cordially invited to make a donation (suggestion $10) by etransfer to manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com.\nPlease note\, the text is not available in Chapters stores. It can be purchased from Chapters online and from Amazon.ca. It is also available as an ebook. We recommend that you purchase the text promptly as there have been issues with availability.

SUMMARY:Getting Started in Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Getting Started in Stewardship\nTuesday\, February 21 – 1 p.m. EST\nPresented on Zoom \nJoin United Church people from across the country to learn some stewardship first principles.\nStart with an on-line 2-hour course that answers questions like: What is stewardship all about anyway? Isn’t stewardship just a churchy word for fundraising? Why do people give\, and why would they give to our church? What can we do to encourage greater generosity? \nThe practical assignments that follow will help you reflect on giving and generosity as part of your faith\, gather and interpret some of the giving data from your community of faith\, and build a stewardship team in order to start making stewardship a priority in your community of faith. \nCompletion of this course is a great first step before participating in Stewardship Best Practices\, which will be offered next in March 2023. \nRegistration link – https://forms.office.com/r/idCxNLcBeg \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Rethink and Renew: Restarting anti-poverty initiatives in the Church
DESCRIPTION:‘Truly I tell you\, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine\, you did for me.’ In Matthew 25:40\, God call us to be of service to others and to end poverty in our communities. The Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown meant that many Church programs stopped running… and many did not start up again. This could be a time to lament what we have lost but it is also an opportunity to start again and build even better projects. Join MILC on Monday\, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom for a panel discussion about anti-poverty work in our communities. The panel presentations offer a chance to hear about Christian responsibility to work to end poverty\, root causes of poverty in our communities and how Churches can get involved in practical projects. This panel of speakers will help participants bring new life to projects to address poverty in our communities. \nPanel speakers:\nRev. Glen Eagle\, United Church of Canada\nRev. Pam Cullen\, London Community Chaplaincy\nRev. Michael Blair\, General Secretary\, United Church of Canada \nRegister online at https://www.manitoulearningcommunity.com/. \nContact Gillian if you have any questions at manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com
