SUMMARY:CCS Friday - Transgressive Devotion
DESCRIPTION:Join an online conversation with Natalie Wigg-Stevenson on her new book “Transgressive Devotion: Theology as Performance Art.” Natalie teaches theology at Emmanuel College. In Transgressive Devotion she argues that theology done as performance art stops trying to describe who God is\, and starts trying to make God appear. \nCCS Fridays are hosted by the Centre for Christian Studies\, to help us all respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These are in the form of workshops and are open to anyone who might be interested. There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups. \nYou must register to participate at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYqd-6vqDopE9zwGGJVthDNuSnjvbUXTciz\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:CCS - Christianity and Environmental Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:I would like to personally invite you to join us on Thursday\, December 2\, 12–1:30 p.m. EST (Online\, Free\, Register Here) for a presentation–conversation on Christianity and Environmental Apocalypse: Lessons from the Nineteenth Century. \nTo view the poster for this event\, please click on the button below: \nPoster\n  \nChurch leaders in North America now confront an environmental crisis that already shapes our lives and seems to threaten apocalyptic destruction. However\, as many Indigenous authors and scholars–including Nick Estes (Kul Wicasa)\, Kim TallBear (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate)\, and Cherie Dimaline (Métis)–have pointed out\, colonialism has already brought apocalypses to North America that are intimately connected to the current crisis. \nIn this presentation\, Emmanuel’s historian of religion and empire\, Prof. Matthew Dougherty\, uses this insight to re-examine Protestant settlers’ attitudes toward the environment during the nineteenth-century colonization of the Great Lakes region. Focusing particularly on the predecessor bodies of The United Church of Canada\, Dougherty discusses how their approaches to nature were neither purely utilitarian nor entirely reverent\, but instead reflected the entanglement of Christian theologies with colonial approaches to economics\, agriculture and land tenure. Considered anew\, these histories offer both lessons and cautions for Christian leaders seeking to confront the contemporary crisis. Dougherty will engage in a conversation with the Rev. Murray Pruden (National Executive Minister for Indigenous Ministries and Justice for the United Church of Canada)\, who will also moderate our Q&A. \nPlease feel free to share widely with family\, friends and colleagues via email and social media. I have attached two iterations of the event’s poster (hyperlinked PDF for email\, JPG for social sharing). The event is also posted on Emmanuel’s social channels to share directly via social: \nFacebook: https://fb.me/e/1StkuflpU\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CWoGGdGrVt4/\nTwitter: https://twitter.com/EmmanuelColleg2/status/1463198380398686224/photo/1 \nPlease visit the Centre for Religion and Its Contexts events page for our upcoming offerings in 2022\, including the Exploring Satisfaction & Stress in Ministry: Personalized Insights to Cultivate Well-Being workshop series. \nI hope you can join us Thursday! \nIn gratitude\, \nShawn \nWant to hear about what’s happening at Emmanuel College–current stories about our community and upcoming events? SUMMARY:Transgender Day 2021
DESCRIPTION:What is Transgender Day of Remembrance?\nNovember 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance. The day is used to remember the transgender and gender non-conforming individuals who are no longer with us due to acts of violence. \nI encourage everyone to remember and pray for our Transgender friends\, family members and those whose names are unknown to us\, who have been attacked or killed this year. \nBeing one’s\, authentic self should not be an invitation to violence or possibly death. We are all fearfully and wonderfully made. \nHere is a prayer… \nGod of love\, you see each one of us as beloved. You know the names of all of those misnamed or misgendered at birth and you claim us all as your children. \nGod of peace\, comfort those who mourn. When one of us hurts we all hurt. \nGive us the courage to speak out for those whose voices have been silenced\, to stand with those who are bullied and walk with those who fear danger. \nGod of beauty\, you are beyond gender. You made each of us in your image. Be with us today as we remember all our family…Amen \n  \nClick here for more information: \nhttps://united-church.ca/worship-special-days/transgender-day-remembrance

SUMMARY:MP Retreat "Emotional Intelligence" with Jenny Stephens
DESCRIPTION:“Emotional Intelligence” with Jenny Stephens\nLuke 24: 30-32 (Inclusive Language Bible)\nAfter sitting down with them to eat\, Jesus took bread\, said the blessing\, then broke the bread and began to distribute it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus\, who immediately vanished from their sight.\nThey said to one another\,\n“Weren’t our hearts burning inside us as this one talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?” \n‘Being an emotionally intelligent leader’ retreat\, will invite reflection and conversation in order for eyes to be opened\, that we might recognize ourselves and others more clearly. What if the two on the way to Emmaus\, had realized in the moment that their hearts were burning inside them? What shifts in our relationships\, if we grow our self-awareness and are able to manage ourselves better?\nThe retreat includes learning about the competencies which contribute to the four quadrants of emotional intelligence – self-awareness\, self-management\, social awareness and relationship management\, the challenge of the amygdala hijack and how that connects to responses to micro-aggressions\, and reflection on your practice of ministry through these anxious times. \nA self-assessment tool is available upon registration. \nJenny Stephens will be leading this event and Erin Todd will ground us in body work throughout our time together. \nAbout Jenny Stephens:\nBesides her work at the General Council Office as the Office of Vocation Coordinator and Team Lead\, Jenny is a trainer with The Center for Emotional Intelligence and Human Relations Skills (www.eqhr.org). The EQ-HR Center was established to bring training in emotional intelligence and human relations skills to faith leaders. An early adopter of the activities of the EQ-HR Center\, Jenny has served on the Board and is currently secretary of the Program\, Staffing and Coaching Team. She is convinced that growing our emotional intelligence as faith leaders enhances our ability to engage healthy pastoral relationships and to serve God’s mission through the church more effectively. Jenny currently serves as the President of the Interim Ministry Network where the emphasis on being a ‘self-differentiated leader’ dovetails well with the EQ-HR work. \nAbout Erin Todd:\nHi! I’m Erin. And here’s a bit about me. \nI have been an ordained United Church minister for sixteen years; (though I have been working in ministry in various capacities for about twenty-five years). \nBorn and raised in Sudbury\, I have been back in my hometown and happily engaged in ministry at Grace United Church for the past twelve years\, following ministry gigs in Whitby\, Stouffville\, Toronto and Wawa. \nI love being a minister. \nI also am a Can Fit Pro certified Personal Fitness Trainer\, with a passion for what I like to call “whole person wellness”: an approach to health and fitness which is multifaceted\, affirming and celebratory\, and which helps people of all ages\, abilities and fitness levels to access and enjoy physical fitness in a supportive community setting. \nWith this philosophy in mind\, couple of years ago I launched a programme called Soul Strong\, which folks seem to be enjoying. \nYou can read more about that on my website: soulstrong@godaddysites.com\nI am an enthusiastic long-distance runner\, cyclist\, swimmer and kayaker\, who has dabbled in marathons and triathlons and such. \nMostly I just love moving my body and helping people discover and move their bodies too!  \nPlease click on the button below to register for the event and you will be sent a Self Assessment Tool via email.   \nHope to see you there!\nBlessings\, \nRob Smith \n  \nFor more information on the outline for the day\, please click on the button below: \nOutline for Event\n  \nTo Register for the event\, please click on the button below: \nRegistration\n

SUMMARY:DECODE/DISCOVER/DETERMINE: A Workshop on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
DESCRIPTION:UNDRIP affects everyone in Canada\, not just Indigenous Peoples\nModerated by Lisa Blais and Susan Lindquist \nThis workshop will support persons of faith in their understanding so that they can endorse this declaration in action and move towards building right relations with Indigenous People. The goals of the workshop are to DECODE what UNDRIP is; to DISCOVER why it is\, or should be\, important to people of faith\, and to DETERMINE steps to implement it\, in church and in society. The recent heartbreaking discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves on Residential School grounds and the struggle of the Wet’suwet’en peoples in British Columbia are current examples of how the UN Declaration has particular application. \nThis workshop will be offered via Zoom\, but there will be many opportunities for active participation. In person break out rooms are also a possibility. For more information please contact manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com or call Gillian 705 671 0185. \nTo Register\nGo to Manitou Intentional Learning Community website Manitou Intentional Learning Community\nhttp://www.manitoulearningcommunity.com/ \nClick on REGISTER in the event details and a Zoom link will be sent to you.
