SUMMARY:Welcome: Extending our Understanding
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Dr. Miriam Spies and Rev. Dr. Laurie Stevenson will share their recent doctoral research. Miriam Spies is an ordained minister in The United Church of Canada. She is a crip and queer theologian who finds conversations between theology and disability and/or crip studies rich. Miriam defended her PhD thesis\, “A Crip Incarnational Model of Ministry” at Emmanuel College\, Toronto School of Theology and is graduating in Spring 2025.\nAs an ordained United Church minister with over 25 years of experience in congregational ministry and as a mother to a child with complex mental illness\, Laurie Stevenson’s Doctor of Ministry research explores the intersection of mental illness\, stigma and faith within United Church congregations. Drawing from personal and professional perspectives\, her study seeks to uncover the experiences shaping the faith of family members with loved ones with mental illness and recommend strategies for enhancing church environments to foster better listening and support. She successfully defended her thesis in September of this year at Emmanuel College\, Toronto School of Theology and is graduating in Spring 2025.\nPlease join MILC to hear these two wonderful speakers.\nTo register: https://www.manitoulearningcommunity.com

SUMMARY:Learning on Purpose 2024: CCS’s intensive leadership development course
DESCRIPTION:Leadership doesn’t have to mean a business suit and a firm handshake. It doesn’t require a flashy persona and all the hippest jargon. It’s not about having the power to call all the shots. \nThe Centre for Christian Studies is grounded in the diaconal tradition\, which means being the church in the world. It means standing with those who are marginalized. It means leadership that empowers others\, and it’s grounded in a theology of justice. \nAt Learning on Purpose you’ll explore models of leadership and approaches to theology\, education\, pastoral care\, and social justice that empower and create change. \nLearning on Purpose: Changing Leadership for a Changing World is the Centre for Christian Studies’ 2-week intensive leadership development module. It is a practical\, holistic\, hands-on\, learning community experience\, and those who take it come out feeling transformed (in a good way!). \nLearning on Purpose 2024 will be held in Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue (Montreal)\, QC from June 17 – 28. \nit is open to Continuing Studies students who want to be better leaders as well as CCS diaconal ministry and certificate students starting their programs.

Dr. Munther Isaac\, from Bethlehem\, in via technology speaking on “Jesus’ call to be peace-builders”\n• Dr. Gabor Mate will also address our gathering by zoom on “Would you rather be illusioned or see things as they really are”.\n• Mariam Barghouti – a journalist from Ramallah on “What is happening right now? How voices of Palestinians are being silenced”. \nWe will learn together from what our resource people have to say as well as each participant\, as we share our experiences\, insights and understanding. \nWe hope to be encouraged and re-vitalized in our support of human rights for Palestinians and justice and peace for Israelis and Palestinians. \nFor more information\, check the Gathering website at https://unjppi.ca or email George Bartlett at g.bartlett@sympatico.ca.

SUMMARY:Discipleship in a Burning World
DESCRIPTION:Discipleship in a Burning World\nThe New Creed of the United Church of Canada calls us “to live with respect in Creation” recognizing that creation is a gift of God. We recognize too that caring for Creation is a spiritual commitment and that environmental issues have profound ethical and moral dimensions that impact us all. \nWith this in mind\, the Manitou Intentional Learning Community is excited to present a workshop “Discipleship in a Burning World” that will invite us to reorient ourselves within creation and examine what that demands of our discipleship. \nThe event will take place on Wednesday\, April 27th\, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom and our special guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Jessica Hetherington\, an eco-theologian and ordered minister within the United Church of Canada serving in the Ottawa area who will share with us her passion for environmental justice and behaviour change. Following her presentation\, there will be opportunities for questions and discussion. \nTo register and receive the Zoom link\, please visit manitoulearningcommunity.com

SUMMARY:Lenten Study: Death of Jesus for Progressive Christians
DESCRIPTION:Lenten Study: Death of Jesus for Progressive Christians\nThe Manitou Intentional Learning Community invites you to participate in a three-week Lenten study\, The Death of Jesus for Progressive Christians published in 2019. Donald Schmidt’s study guides participants through the Biblical stories about the death of Jesus “invit[ing] us to ask the larger question hanging in the background. Why did Jesus die?” Schmidt suggests that “Jesus’ theme of God’s involvement in the world on behalf of the marginalized . . . was a major challenge to the religious order of the day. It had to be stopped.” The ideas explored in this text resonate with people of faith in the modern world. In the introduction\, Schmidt writes: “The point of this study is to help you . . . analyze\, celebrate\, incarnate\, and try to live out the powerful story of the events leading up to Jesus’ death and burial.”\nLeadership will be provided by Rev. Dave LeGrand\, Rev. Erin Todd\, and Rev. Dawn Vaneyk. Sessions will take place via Zoom on Monday\, March 21\, March 28 and April 4 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\nTo register\, please go to www.manitoulearning.com and click on the registration link for this event.\nIf you have questions or would like more information\, contact Gillian at manitouintentionallearning@gmail.com

SUMMARY:CCS Friday - Becoming an Anti-Racist Church
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online conversation to explore more about what it might mean to become an anti-racist church. How does an organization continue the process of institutional change to become a more intentionally anti-racist one? Together\, we’ll explore a continuum for becoming an anti-racism organization as well as the United Church’s national anti-racism action plan. The conversation will be facilitated by Adele Halliday\, who is the Anti-Racism and Equity Lead staff at the United Church’s General Council Office. \nAdele Halliday is the Anti-Racism and Equity Lead staff at the national office of The United Church of Canada. An experienced anti-racism educator\, workshop leader\, and award-winning writer\, Adele has been involved in anti-racism work with churches in Canada and beyond for many years. She is currently staff resource to the United Church’s Anti-Racism Common Table. She holds a Master of Education as well as a Master of Theological Studies\, and is currently studying towards a Doctor of Education. Adele lives in Toronto\, Ontario\, Canada. \nCCS Fridays are online conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be on a Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 Central (Winnipeg time) and in the form of a Zoom workshop. There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups. \nSessions are free but you must register.\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEkcuihqzspHtTmzSydBr3p3D-HMsqeODZi

SUMMARY:VST - Save the Date - January 30\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:For years\, the Vancouver School of Theology has been organizing VST SUNDAY – a day where students\, faculty\, staff and alumni all head out into the worshipping communities and share in worship. VST folks blend into the church service as clergy wish – a faculty member may preach\, a student may offer a prayer\, and during pre-pandemic times the VST person would stand at a table with VST Swag during coffee time to chat about the school and give away pens! \nThe Pandemic has given us the opportunity to share pre-recorded options (faculty and student sermons\, student testimonials and prayers) and do live zoom! \nPlease let me know if you’re interested and we can talk about how something might work. \nRev.
