CALL for General Council 44 Commissioners
The CSRC Nominations committee is seeking interested members spanning the full range of identities and church experiences. Please help us by spreading the word.
Being a Commissioner to General Council no longer involves being elected just weeks before the General Council meeting and hopping on a plane. Instead, it is a four-year commitment, with a year of education and training and three years of “recall” meetings that make decisions for the entire church, and opportunities to keep reflecting and deciding on a wide range of concerns.
An important planning note:
General Council 44 will be held July 22nd to 26th, 2022. In light of the COVID – 19 pandemic uncertainties the meeting will be entirely online. Even if you, or a good candidate you know, have limited internet or older equipment, do not let that keep you from applying or from encouraging others. General Council planning will include accessibility for a video meeting.
The Canadian Shield Regional Council needs capable and committed commissioners for the next three year period. The real time commitment will be four (4) years because there is one year prior to GC44 for education and training.
Please give this call for nominations your careful consideration.
For the 44th General Council, Canadian Shield Regional Council is entitled to send 9 commissioners. That number includes:
- The serving Chair of Canadian Shield Regional Council
- One position for Indigenous representation (Lay or Ministry)
- One position for a person identifying as racialized (Lay or Ministry)
- One position for youth/young adult (Lay or Ministry) to be nominated through a process identified through the Youth Resource Team
- 5 Commissioners who are elected from the applications submitted to the Nominations Committee and approved by the Region at a Regional Council Meeting June 10th, 2021
The Canadian Shield Regional Council deadline for nominations for GC44 Commissioners is May 31st, 2021.
The Nominations Committee will meet after that date to ensure that the list of commissioners meets the requirements set by General Council and where possible honors the recommended balance and diversity. The Nominations Committee will also be guided by a commitment made by The United Church of Canada and affirmed by Canadian Shield Regional Council Executive of “honouring and living into intercultural mission and ministry.”
Once the Nominations Committee has compiled the Nominations list of GC44 Commissioners, they will then present that list to the Canadian Shield Regional Council at the Virtual Election meeting Thursday, June 10th, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
There will be NO nominations from the floor of the meeting – the deadline for nominations is May 31, 2021.
SPECIAL NOTES OF CLARIFICATION:
Candidates that are not elected will be placed on a list of alternates which will be used to replace an elected commissioner(s) if someone needs to retire. The list may also be used to help maintain the diversity requirements for the General Council meeting.

Job Description for a GC44 Commissioner
As the voting members of a General Council, Commissioners serve an essential role in The United Church of Canada. Following the guidance of the Holy Spirit present in our gatherings, Commissioners set policy and take action on a wide-range of questions including those of doctrine, worship, governance, and public-witness. Commissioners elect the Moderator who will serve as the spiritual leader of the church until the next regular meeting. Being a Commissioner is a significant commitment of both time and energy. For most people, it is also an enriching and faith-deepening one.
